1. Introduction
2. The Holy Spirit conceived Jesus.
The Apostles’ Creed declares: “I believe in Jesus Christ … conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary.” Awakening Impact Ministries’ Statement of Faith believes the same.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:18-21
…behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. He said “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Scripture tells us that Mary conceived supernaturally. Some religions have wrongly said Christians believe God had sex with a woman. God having sex with a woman is not what happened because Holy Spirit is holy, so He would not do that. And secondly, He is Spirit, so there was no physical intimacy. It is not difficult for God to perform a creative miracle like Mary conceiving Jesus without a father because He was able to create man from the dust of the earth. As prophesied by Isaiah:
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Isaiah 7:14
3. Holy Spirit and Adam
A. At creation, it was the Holy Spirit who Breathed Life Into Adam.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7
LORD is יְהוָֹה YHWH; Yahweh and God is the word אֱלֹהִים” lôhîym; or Elohim
The word Spirit in Genesis 1:2 is the word: רוּחַ rûaḥ; wind; by resemblance breath,
The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Gen 1:2
Listen to how it sounds: like a breath, an exhalation: ruach
So, the Spirit of the LORD God brings Adam to life. And it is the same Holy Spirit who breathed life inside of Mary.
B. The Gift of Righteousness
Similarly, the New Covenant brings the gift of righteousness and allows the Holy Spirit to breathe resurrection life into our bodies and conceive a new creation.
4. Jesus was Born of the Holy Spirit
And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:35
Like Jesus, we are born of the Spirit at our new birth.
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
John 3:5
5. Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of God
Adam was the natural-born son of God; Jesus, the last Adam, was the spirit-born only-begotten Son of God.
And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:45, 47-49
As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly.
And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, weshallalso bear the image of the heavenly Man.
The word ”shall” in the last sentence is not in the Greek translation. We bear the image of Jesus now.
There is only one begotten son of God. However, there are many sons – those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord.
Begotten means Jesus was not created. Before the world existed, he preexisted as the Word of God (John 1:1) and the Lamb of God (Revelation 13:8).
just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,
Ephesians 1:4-5
6. Jesus Taught the Word of God as a Child
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.
Luke 2:46-47
A. Evidence of the Indwelling of The Holy Spirit.
Jesus did have the Holy Spirit inside of Him. As a result, He (being the Word) could explain the scriptures better than anybody else.
Some people think preaching and teaching are evidence of the Holy Spirit’s baptism, which is not the case. It is evidence of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and Jesus.
B. Proof of Holy Spirit Baptism.
Jesus could not do any miracles until baptised in the Holy Spirit.
The evidence of Holy Spirit baptism is power:
And you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you…
Acts 1:8
It is the same with us. We cannot perform God’s miracles without the Holy Spirit coming upon us.
7. Jesus was Water-Baptised, then the Holy Spirit Descended Upon Him
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
Matthew 3:13
Jesus was then immediately baptised in Spirit.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from
Matthew 3:16-17
heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Applying this truth to ourselves, it is essential to realise that God is sovereign. Generally, this is true: water baptism comes first.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.
Acts 19:5-6
However, the Holy Spirit may decide to come upon them with power first.
For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
Acts 10:46-47
8. Father Anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit
It is the Father who anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit AND power:
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
Acts 10:38
Yet with us, it is Jesus who baptises us with the Holy Spirit and power:
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Matthew 3:11
Why is that? Because God has given Jesus all authority! Using the name of Jesus ensures power comes with authority. This authority is different from the authority to be sons and daughters of God:
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right (Greek is authority) to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
John 1:12
Therefore, authority to move in power, as Jesus did, comes when the Spirit comes upon us. We destroy the devil’s works as we saw Jesus do in Acts 10:38.
9. Jesus Operated Through the Anointing of the Holy Spirit
We saw that the Holy Spirit came UPON Jesus at His baptism.
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
Luke 4:18-19
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”
We saw that the “He” in this verse is God the Father.
This anointing is literally “smearing” upon with Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s anointing is to destroy the devil’s works. We do this by preaching the gospel, healing the broken-hearted, setting captives free and so forth. In other words, we do the same as Jesus – through having Holy Spirit in us (new birth) and upon us (baptism of the Holy Spirit).
10. Jesus Did Only the Things His Father Told Him to Do
For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.
John 12:49
To know what to do, we should spend time with the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Knowing what to do comes from having close fellowship with the Trinity.
We have seen excellent teaching worldwide of moving in the power of the Holy Spirit. What we are now seeing is a realisation of the love of the Father. In our teachings, we will see that our relationship with the Father is an essential step to seeing the power and glory released on earth.
11. Jesus Only Releases the Holy Spirit to Do What He Sees the Father Do
Jesus operated by the Spirit of God, seeing what the Father wanted to do and when miracles happened.
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
John 5:19
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
The Father will show you more wonderful works you can do! Us doing miracles is because He is the One doing the work:
Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
John 6:28-29
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
12. Jesus Operated Through the Holy Spirit, Doing the Will of the Father
Jesus’ healings and miracles were through the Spirit. However, the will of the Father was paramount over the power of the Holy Spirit.
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous,
John 5:30
because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
Jesus is given all authority after ascending into heaven.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
Matthew 28:18
We see above that Jesus could do nothing without the Father. Now, the Father has given Jesus all authority. For this reason, we can only do miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit that agrees with the will of Jesus:
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5
Jesus could do nothing without the Father. He is now King in His kingdom and has all authority, so we can do nothing without him.
Next, in Holy Spirit Baptism, we look at the infilling of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit’s coming upon someone when Jesus baptises them in the Holy Spirit.
