1. Introduction
This study will determine why the believer’s victory over sin can be complete.
Previously, we looked at how sin affected humanity in Sin Entered the World. Sin acts on a person from the outside, making them powerless to resist and overcome it. Once we sin, we develop a nature that continues to sin and is powerless to overcome its grip. We then become a sinner. The law empowers the sin in us and produces death within us.
However, the believer can live with victory over sin and can overcome it by the power of the Spirit and the grace of God.
2. Believer’s Victory Over Sin is Complete because of what Jesus did on the cross.
A. Before Christ, We Were Dead In Our Sins.
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
Ephesians 2:1
B. Christ Died for Us While we Were Sinners.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
C. Jesus was Made Sin
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him
2 Corinthians 5:21
D. Sin Killed Jesus
Because Jesus became sin, sin killed Jesus. The study, God did not forsake Jesus, shows that sin killed Jesus, not the wrath of God.
In Sin Entered the World, we learned that sin brings condemnation, judgement, corruption and death.
For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
Romans 6:10
E. Not Only Did Sin Kill Jesus, But He Also Carried Away Our Sins That We Do.
who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
1 Peter 2:24
3. We are Dead to Sin and no longer a Sinner.
A. The Sin Nature Has Been Done Away With, You are No Longer a Sinner.
knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
Romans 6:6
B. Because Jesus Died and You Died in Christ You are Dead to Sin.
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:11
4. No Condemnation or Judgement
Believers’ victory over sin is complete because we are neither judged nor condemned.
A. As Believers, We are No Longer Judged.
In Sin Entered the World we found that sin brings judgment. When sin died in Christ, judgement died in Christ.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 5:24
B. There is No Condemnation in Jesus Christ.
When sin died in Jesus, condemnation also ceased for the believer.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1
Having no judgment or condemnation takes our focus off sin and onto the author of our faith, Jesus. This empowers the believer to walk in victory over sin.
5. Righteousness and Grace Reigns
Believers’ victory over sin is complete because righteousness and grace reign; sin does not reign.
A. Sin no Longer Reigns Over You.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Romans 6:14
B. Righteousness Now Reigns.
For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
Romans 5:17
C. Grace Now Reigns.
so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:21
6. Being a New Creation Empowers us to Sin no More
A. This all Happens Because We are Now a New Creation When We Believe in Jesus
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Sin died in you.
You are dead to sin.
Sin no longer reigns in you.
Judgment has ended for you.
Condemnation has ended for you.
Righteousness reigns in you.
Grace reigns in you.
You are a new creation, no longer a sinner
B. Because Sin No Longer Reigns, and Righteousness and Grace Reign, You Now Have the Power to Not Sin.
Believers now can walk in victory over sin.
Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:11-14
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
C. We Will Still Sin as Believers, But Sin Does Not Reign Over Us.
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:8-9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
D. We Sin When We Give Into our Desires.
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed.
James 1:14
Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
Notice that we don’t sin immediately thoughts come into our minds. We now choose whether we resist sin or give in to it.
E. We Give Sin Opportunity if We Don’t Want to Walk in the Light. This Verse Also Teaches us That People Continue to Sin Where They Love Sin.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
John 3:19-20
7. Summary of Believers’ Victory Over Sin
- Believers’ victory over sin is complete because righteousness and grace reign, sin does not reign.
- We are dead to sin and no longer a sinner.
- Believers’ victory over sin is complete because we are neither judged nor condemned.
Now that we have seen that we can walk in victory over sin as a believer, we will look at what Jesus has done with the law, which is good news!
