1. Introduction

Fellowship with the Holy Spirit is the second in the series of five fellowships with God in the Bible. We have already looked at Fellowship in the Gospel, the entry into fellowship with God.

2. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit

A. We CAN have Fellowship with the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Fellowship with the Holy Spirit is wonderful, for He is our comforter, our teacher, resurrection life flows out of Him, the anointing comes through Him, and power comes through Him.

Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,

Philippians 2:1

B. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit Grows through our Personal Prayer Language

When we use our prayer language, we are praying with the spirit. Praying with the Spirit strengthens our relationship with the Holy Spirit.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

1 Corinthians 14:14-15

Benny Hinn’s book, “Good Morning, Holy Spirit”, was instrumental in seeing people learn to converse with the PERSON of the Holy Spirit rather than talk ABOUT the Holy Spirit.

C. Fellowship grows by Walking in the Spirit

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:16

3. Benefits of Fellowship with the Holy Spirit.

A. Gifts of the Holy Spirit

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11

B. Fruit of the Holy Spirit

The more time we spend in fellowship with the Holy Spirit, the more we become like Him.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

C. He will be your Helper

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

John 16:7

D. He brings Power

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

E. He is Truth

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

John 16:13

F. Further Teaching

Because I love fellowship with the Holy Spirit so much, we have a series on the Holy Spirit. These are Holy Spirit and Jesus, Being Filled with Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit Baptism, and Tongues: A Personal Prayer Language.

4. The Holy Spirit is Jealous

One of the Holy Spirit’s main things is to protect you from being taken over by worldliness.

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

James 4:4-6

He wants to make you into a friend of God, not an enemy of God through worldliness.

5. Risk of Power Bringing Spiritual Pride

The risk is that we enjoy the power of the Holy Spirit more than fellowship with the Holy Spirit. People who want to join the ministry often ask me, “Are you Pentecostal?” They say this as if they have “arrived”. It is sad to hear this and shows a weakness of spiritual pride. They are not prepared to learn that Pentecost is the beginning and that God’s original intention is to have sons and daughters. They are to be holy and blameless and grow from glory to glory.

I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit, I speak in different tongues, I have seen the dead raised, deaf ears hear, barren wombs opened, blind eyes see, lepers healed and paralysed walk in the name of Jesus. But Jesus warns us:

Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Matthew 7:22-23

Unfortunately, some “Pentecostal” or “Charismatic” churches have camped at the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit. They have become just as (and sometimes more) religious than the churches they think are better.
